Emergint to provide IT services to support CDC efforts to reduce tobacco use in developing countries
(ATLANTA, GA) - Emergint Technologies, Inc is pleased to announce their involvement in the Bloomberg Initiative to Reduce Tobacco Use, a $125 million collaboration to reduce tobacco use globally. Emergint will provide technical guidance and assistance for the Global Adult Tobacco Survey (GATS), a critical component of the overall initiative. GATS is implemented by the Global Tobacco Control Program in the Office on Smoking and Health at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and by the World Health Organization (WHO) and is administered by the CDC Foundation, CDC's independent nonprofit partner.
Each year, 5.4 million people die due to tobacco use. In 2006, Bloomberg Philanthropies awarded a grant to the CDC Foundation to support CDC's and WHO's efforts to implement GATS. GATS is being conducted initially in 14 countries, and the results will provide globally comparable data on adult tobacco use prevalence and the use and effectiveness of key tobacco control measures.
GATS is a component of a broader tobacco monitoring system known as the Global Tobacco Surveillance System (GTSS). GTSS consists of three school-based and one household-based survey. GATS is the most recent addition to this surveillance network, and the survey will provide nationally representative data based on household sampling.
Emergint will support the implementation of GATS by providing technical guidance and assistance in the form of data management, statistical analysis, data dissemination, and quality control. Technical guidance and assistance will be provided not only at CDC, but also at the GATS implementing agencies within each of the 14 countries. Emergint will conduct statistical analysis using SAS®, SPSS, MicrosoftSAS® AccessSAS®, Microsoft SQL ServerSAS® CE, and StataSAS®. Our initial analyses will be for epidemiological reports of adult tobacco use and related-variables for individual countries. One example of this will be our analysis of tobacco use prevalence among men and women stratified by rural or urban location.
