NIH/CSR Recognizes Emergint for Role with Historic Surge in Grant Applications
(ROCKVILLE, MD) - At a recent award ceremony, and in correspondence with our CEO, the National Institutes of Health/Center for Scientific Review (NIH/CSR) recognized Emergint for our rapid response in hiring additional employees and our ability to provide quality work and outstanding customer service. Melanie Keller, Executive Officer, Acting Chief Information Officer, and Deputy Ethics Counselor at CSR, expressed our services "exceeded their expectations." CSR received over 24,000 additional grant applications for Federal stimulus funds over and above the base of about 80,000 anticipated in a normal year. This surge represents the largest single response to a call for research applications in history!
The majority of these applications came in for the Challenge Grants Program, created in the spring of 2009 after the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) was signed into law. As one of President Obama's responses to help stimulate the economy, ARRA provided $10.4 billion in new funding to NIH to fund projects that create or retain jobs, and support projects that have potential to make scientific progress in the next two years. The Challenge Grant Program was designed to spur new areas of research in bioethics, translational science, genomics, health disparities, enhancing clinical trials, behavioral change and prevention, and regenerative medicine.
CSR receives all NIH and many Public Health Service (PHS) grant applications, and assigns them to the appropriate NIH Institutes and Centers and PHS agencies. The NIH includes 27 institutes and centers and is an Operating Division of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS). It is the primary federal agency for conducting and supporting basic, clinical and translational medical research, and investigates the causes, treatments, and cures for both common and rare diseases.1 Emergint has been supporting NIH and CSR since July 2005.
