Emergint consults on school-based syndromic surveillance system

(LOUISVILLE, KY) - For the past year, Emergint has been providing information technology consulting services to the University of Louisville Research Foundation Inc. on the Kentucky Syndromic Surveillance System (KYSSS) project. The goal of the KYSSS project is to perform a feasibility study and to develop a near-real-time school-based syndromic surveillance system pilot that would provide early detection of pandemic flu and other communicable diseases. KYSSS is one component of the Pandemic Preparedness Project, a leading research effort, awarded to the University of Louisville to help communities prepare and respond to pandemics. The project is funded by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, and managed by the National Institute for Hometown Security (NIHS) as part of the Kentucky Critical Infrastructure Protection Program. On February 1, 2010, the Emergint team began developing the pilot system that will test the technological components of this system.
